It sounds simple, but I can’t tell you how many times a day I hear, “I can’t do it,” “I don’t know how,” “I just don’t understand,” “I can’t see the answer,” “I don’t want to because it’s too hard,” and other versions of self-doubt, distrust, and fear. And we make space for all of it. “You can do hard things,” isn’t a catch phrase. It’s a pure belief that turns into internal self-talk (hello verbal working memory) and becomes a new story that autistic and ADHD kids can live into!

“How did your brain come up with that?”
“My brain is really smart.”
He’s 4 years old.
Autistic. Inspiring. Amazing.
As he plays, I see his little mind projecting a pretend world.
A world that’s perfect. Just for him.
A world with aliens eating trains.
A world creating an escape but also feeling so real.
There’s comfort in it.
•
And then, the giggle.
The purest laughter I’ve ever heard emerging from a tiny human.
Unfiltered. Joyful.
A laughter that connects us in a way that remains unspoken.
He doesn’t have to ask,
“Please get me,” or
“Are you listening?”
He just knows I am.
He knows I’ve entered into his imagination.
Only because he let me in.
And now that we’re connected,
Here we will stay.
In this world that we can co-create.
There is a safety in the now.
And time is nothing but a number.
•
Sure, the play will close.
The idea will be wrapped up.
And our moment together will come to an end.
But not yet.
Right now we can just be.
Enjoying the flying aliens and making believe.

If I have to hear (again) that a 6 year old autistic child is getting suspended from a program that was specifically designed for autistic kids, I may lose it. But, before I do, let me tell you what others won’t:
1- telling a kid you love them and then taking away what they worked so hard for is showing them how conditional your relationship is
2- negating what the child is saying because it doesn’t fit within your idea of appropriateness is showing them how conditional your relationship is
3- calling the child aggressive and unsafe when they’re in emotional distress is showing them how conditional your relationship is
•
Autistic and ADHD kids aren’t here to make your life difficult. They’re here to shed some light onto what it’s like to be neurodivergent.
•
If you’re ready to level up your therapy game, I have a course that will show you how. Link 🔗 in bio.
