Respecting your child's autonomy in the therapeutic process
Autistic and ADHD kids, as well as those with sensory processing and language/learning difficulties, approach the environment with a heightened nervous system. The goal of the therapeutic process is thus to respect each child’s autonomy, set expectations that are aligned with their current skills, and leverage their strengths to encourage mistake making, build components of executive functioning, and form integrative solutions.
Strong comprehension and language expression are also essential for managing unfavorable social situations, figuring out the perspectives of others, and bridging ideas together to effectively communicate. The underpinnings of language are rooted in executive functioning, which then promote literacy, as students unlock meta-learning.
