This 2-day training presents a comprehensive framework that focuses on the roles of self-regulation and emotional development as precursors to building executive function skills. An in-depth analysis of autism, ADHD, and developmental learning disability connects EF challenges to neurodevelopmental models, including Maslow’s Hierarchy. Clinical examples explain the need for bottom-up developmental therapeutic interventions, as opposed to those that prioritize top-down consequence-based methods.
Learning Objectives Day 1:
- Participants will define executive functioning and explain how pertinent skills are represented in daily living.
- Participants will discuss the main purpose of whole-brain integration using knowledge of brain hierarchy.
- Participants will analyze the connections among executive functioning, cognition, language, and social-emotional development to understand how these domains are intertwined with essential components of EF skills.
- Participants will track the progression of executive function skills through play development to discuss the benefits of using play in therapeutic intervention.
Learning Objectives Day 2:
- Participants will identify the foundational capacities that underlie common struggles in Autism, ADHD, and DLD.
- Participants will discuss how relational and play-based therapy address executive function challenges, including higher-level processes, for neurodivergent populations.
- Participants will analyze the core difficulties experienced by ND kids and teens to determine and implement effective strategies across environments.
- Participants will connect how derailment of EF impacts development and affects future health outcomes.
